What Is Cinefest Picton?

Cinefest Picton is a volunteer-run community film group that works in partnership with The Regent Theatre to bring alternative cinema to local audiences.

For more than 25 years, its small team of volunteers has helped present films that audiences in the County might not otherwise have had an opportunity to see locally.

Working closely with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and independent film distributors, Cinefest has brought a varied selection of cinema to the Regent screen, including Canadian productions, international films, independent features and documentaries.

The result is a film-going experience that offers something a little different and gives audiences an opportunity to discover stories, filmmakers and perspectives from Canada and around the world.

A Long-Standing Partnership with The Regent

Cinefest Picton and The Regent Theatre have a relationship stretching back decades.

Historical records show Cinefest operating at the Regent in the 1990s. A December 1998 community publication described Cinefest as being in its third year and noted its role in screening international releases, art films and films from smaller production houses.

That makes Cinefest an important part of the Regent’s modern film history and another example of the theatre’s role as a cultural gathering place for Picton and the wider Prince Edward County community.

Today, Cinefest’s volunteer team continues to work with The Regent to give local audiences access to films that may not receive a conventional theatrical release in the area.
